NOTE: I use inclusive language because I acknowledge that not all individuals who have babies identify as women, and not all birthing people are adult women. If the use of inclusive language, particularly in reference to gender inclusivity, is offensive to you, I may not be the doula for you. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Buh-bye!

Hey, hey!

I’M BRITTANY LADOULA

Full-Spectrum Doula, Lactation Counselor, EBB® Childbirth Educator, Placenta Encapsulation Specialist

When I became pregnant at 19, there was so much that I didn’t know about myself, the birthing process or life itself. I had no idea that I’d suffer through (and somehow survive) an entire pregnancy with Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) without treatment. I did not know a single breathing exercise, coping technique or how to advocate for myself. All I knew is that I was to follow doctor’s orders.

It wasn’t until midway through my second pregnancy, a few years later, that I began to conduct my own research. I opted to receive prenatal care from doula-midwives in place of an obstetrician, and the difference was night and day. For the first time, I experienced patient-centered care. I wasn’t just a number; I was provided information and resources to help me to prepare for my upcoming birth. I was encouraged to believe in myself and trust my body. I was an actively participant in my care and birthing experience. Thanks to their attentiveness and support, coupled with my dedication to advocating for myself, I achieved my goal of an unmedicated VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean).

For the last 8 years, I have been dedicated to paying it forward. I’ve provided support to several families - through birth, loss, lactation and postpartum. My primary focus is on Black birthing parents and their babies because our healthcare system continues to fail us. I am committed to this work because I believe that everyone deserves a safe and empowering birthing experience. Quality and competent care does not involve coercion, fear-mongering and paternalism. You have rights. You have options. You have support. I am proud to be one of many incredible birth workers who continue the work that our ancestors began.

Specialties: VBAC, first-time parents, cesarean birth, single moms
